Job Description:

Jefferson County is home to 22 county owned parks and several multi-use trails spread-out through the County for the public to enjoy.   The Jefferson County Parks Department strives to preserve natural resources for public use and conservation as well as promote the health and wellness of our communities. We operate and maintain a parks system with resource-oriented recreation, trails, and special use parks. We also manage the grounds keeping and grounds improvements for the county’s multiple buildings and campuses.    

This is a new position that emphasizes Natural Resource Management and Volunteer Coordination. In order to maintain a high standard of operation, the department is looking to hire a Building & Grounds Maintenance Worker who is knowledgeable in ecosystem management and forestry, dedicated to our mission, and passionate about our Parks system and includes completing the below key tasks:

  • Performs extensive vegetative management throughout the park system including mowing, weed whipping, chemical and weed spraying, brush and shrub trimming, tree trimming and felling, prairie restoration, hazard identification, tree planting, prairie burns, invasive species control, landscape development and construction, grass seeding and mulching, and stump removal.
  • Coordinates with volunteers from a variety of groups on a variety of projects which may include invasive plant removal, native seed collection, tree planting, and trail maintenance.
  • Operates and maintains a variety of vehicles and equipment such as, but not limited to, skid loader, trucks with trailers, forklift, mowers, tractors, snow blowers, chainsaws, electric clippers, sod cutters, or pruning saws.
  • Assembling, installing, and inspecting outdoor equipment, including playground equipment, picnic tables, park shelters, and other park amenities
  • Assisting with park development construction, carpentry, and masonry projects, and performing woodworking and sign building tasks.
  • Monitoring building and ground premises for safety of occupants, visitors, and employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or that may develop.

Starting Wage: $19.46/hour

Hours: 40 hours/week

Qualifications we are looking for:

  • High school diploma or equivalent with two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience, required.
  • Valid driver’s license
  • At least 18 years of age
  • Three years’ experience and/or training, preferred.
