Job Description for Cook - Part Time
ABOUT THE JAIL FOODSERVICE PROGRAM AT JEFFERSON COUNTY
Jefferson County’s Sheriff Office hosts the Jail Foodservice Program that staffs a team of employees that work hard to provide safe, attractive, wholesome meals to the inmates at Jefferson County Jail and bag lunches to the Huber participants; the program provides approximately 200,000 meals per year. The kitchen is also considered a licensed restaurant so they can provide catering services to large groups for County events, when needed. The kitchen holds high standards for a safe and clean environment and thus has successfully passed each monthly health inspection, yearly state and Department of Corrections (DOC) health inspections, and an inspection by a licensed dietitian each time.
WHAT YOU WILL DO AS A PART TIME COOK
The Jail Foodservice team is currently hiring a Cook to work 36-40 hours per week preparing and serving meals, as well as, directing the community service work of inmates in the kitchen of the Jefferson County Jail.
SOME ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
You will be successful in this role by completing the following tasks and responsibilities:
- Monitoring sanitation practices to ensure that employees and inmates follow standards and regulations
- Ensuring safe handling of food, storing and labeling food appropriately, monitoring temperature of product, taking corrective action as needed, and informing supervisor of problems involved with kitchen operation
- Operating large kitchen equipment such as mixers, steamers, toasters, choppers, ovens, stoves, dishwashing machines, and other tools such as knives in a proper and safe manner
- Monitoring acceptability of food by taste, smell, and visual inspection
- Serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner; preparing bag lunches for Huber inmates, and preparing coffee and other refreshments for various meetings
- Taking inventory of supplies and equipment, stocking shelves with food supplies, and receiving and accounting for kitchen deliveries in supervisor’s absence
Minimum Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 1 to 2 years’ experience
- Obtain Serv-Safe certification within 6 months of hire
Preferred Requirements:
- Experience in institutional food service
Wage & Benefits
Starting hourly wage $18.26 - $20.21/ hour based on experience and qualification.
