Job Description:

Jefferson County Health Department offers the pregnant Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program to promote and maintain the health and well-being of nutritionally at-risk pregnant, breastfeeding, and postpartum women, infants, and children. The program provides supplemental nutritious foods, nutrition and breastfeeding information, and referral to other health and nutrition services, as well as, promotes and supports breastfeeding by having Breastfeeding Peer Support Counselors available to eligible participants.

In order to keep the WIC program operating smoothly, the Health Department is looking to hire an Occasional Part-time WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor to serve as a paraprofessional support person who provides basic breastfeeding information and encouragement to WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers.

As a knowledgeable, experienced, and passionate individual, you will be successful in this role by completing the below key tasks and responsibilities:

  • Counsels WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers by telephone, WIC clinic visits, home visits, and/or hospital visits as determined by the local WIC program.
  • Provides basic breastfeeding information, encouragement, and support to pregnant and breastfeeding mothers to help them get off to a good start with breastfeeding.
  • Helps mother prevent and manage common breastfeeding concerns.
  • Provides strategies to help mothers overcome common breastfeeding barriers.
  • Makes appropriate referrals according to the referral protocols.
  • Variety of other tasks and more information provided on the posted job description.

Starting Wage: $15.00/hour Hours: Part-time; approximately 10 hours/week


Qualifications Needed:

  • A past or current WIC participant is required.
  • Personal experience with breastfeeding, having successfully breastfed at least one infant for a minimum of 6 months, within the last 7 years of being hired.
  • Is enthusiastic and knowledgeable about breastfeeding and wants to help mother enjoy a positive experience.
  • Can work the schedule of hours required per week, as needed by the clinic.
  • Is available to new mothers who are having breastfeeding problems outside the usual clinic hours.
